Touch Screen Phones
Remember when the iPhone first came out? Many hopped to their feet right away to snag the new touch screen phone that would revolutionize the cell phone industry. The iPhone was great in multimedia features, easy to use with it’s touch screen interface, and of course classy as ever. Who didn’t want one?
While the iPhone may have been the first to fully utilize the touch screen technology, the costs were prohibitive to many consumers. So prohibitive in fact that new marketing ploys flourished using a free iPhone as a reward for those willing to pay an overwhelming amount of cash in smaller quantities for assorted products until they received a free iPhone.
The cost of the new touch screen phone wasn’t the only drawback to the awesome and sleek iPhone, there was the carrier selection. The original iPhone was made to work with only one cell phone carrier, which at the time was AT&T. So everyone had to drop their network or risk their iPhone to software IN an effort of making it compatible with other carrier services. The sex appeal faded.
Fortunately for those who either have held out or just didn’t have the extra cash to spend on the new touch screen phone technology, the competition was watching all along and plotting revenge in the form of market share. Manufacturers and carriers saw the demand for new touch screen phones and now have comparable products that may even dwarf some features of the iPhone.
One such feature of many of the new touch screen cell phones are their Bluetooth abilities. Apple has kept their iPhone with typical earphone technology (oddly enough) making wireless audio technology somewhat of a caveman experience compared to what Bluetooth is capable of, but even with that subject set aside many of the features of the new touch screen phones can match up to the iPhone.
Many if not all the new touch screen phones now available are equipped with 3G technology making Internet surfing and streaming media a hassle free experience. Many of the phones have storage capabilities up to 8GB which may not be as much as the iPhone’s 16GB but still provides adequate storage space for the average music and movie fan.
The touch screen phones being offered have additional features that the iPhone does not such as voice dialing capabilities, memory card slots, removable battery packs, and the ability to play WMA files.
The affordability factor for these new phones is what can be considered outstanding however. Many providers offer discounted rebate touch screen phones or are even offer them for free with new contracts. Providers offering touch screen phones include Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and AllTel. With the additional options of carriers and packages you can have a sleek and sexy touch screen phone without succumbing to one provider which allows you to shop for the best plans that will help save you money in the long run.
When shopping for a new touch screen phone remember that your calling plan will be just as important as the phone itself. With a 3G phone it makes obvious sense to have a data (Internet) plan and with that there are various pricing and usage structures. Be careful to observe all pricing options for data and calling before signing up for 2 years. Be realistic in what you will use, if you know you use the Internet a lot then an unlimited data plan may make sense. Going over on your data minutes can prove to be very costly and even run into the thousands of dollars range if you are not careful.

ThinkPad Quality at Budget Price!
I have a long history with ThinkPads at work. As my company’s standard laptop, I have had the priveledge to use a IBM ThinkPad T20, IBM ThinkPad T42, and a Lenovo ThinkPad T61. all have been bulletproof and I have always said that ThinkPads are the only PC laptops I would buy for myself. At home, I use Macs as my primary computers, but with Windows 7, and my aging home-built PCs, I figured it was time to buy a new PC.
You may or may not be familiar with ThinkPads. Relatively bland design and always encased in a black enclosure, these laptops have a reputation in the business community. It is much like the reputation Macs have, in that you may pay a little more, but you also get a little more in terms of build quality.
So about this SL510. It is a ThinkPad at an affordable price. While that is true, the price is higher than you would pay for current laptops from other manufacturers for similar, or even more current hardware. For example, there are newer models with Core I3 and Core I5 chips for less money from other manufacturers. Knowing this, and weighing it against my history with ThinkPads, I still chose the ThinkPad.
My initial impressions after one hour of use:
This laptop is very wide. It is wider than my T61. The difference between 15.4 and 15.6 screens is very noticeable.
The “pencil eraser” pointer is very sensitive and sometimes registers unintentional clicks. I am finding this a little annoying and am still trying to find the settings where I can turn off using the pointer as a clicking input. I want to use it to move the mouse pointer around, but I do not want to use it to left click or selections. I prefer the pointer over the trackpad, which has changed dramatically. There is a strange texture on trackpad. It almost looks like perforations. It enables you to feel the trackpad without looking at it, but this has never really been an issue for me in the past. I’d switch back to the traditional trackpad materials if I were Lenovo.
There is no cd included. You must create your own restore diskfrom the Lenovo utilities installed.
This laptop has not discovered my 5GHz wireless-N network. The wireless card is an Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN. After some research, a forum post indicated that this card only supports wireless-N over the 2.4GHz frequency. While I can change my 2.4 GHZ band to Mixed G/N on my D-Link Dual Band router, I may just live with this laptop’s limitation for now.
When you first boot up, an install wizard includes options to install Diskeeper 2009 (a nice option), Norton Security 2009 (which wait suntil after you register to tell you that you are signing up for their subscription service after 30 days of use), and several ads for Net-zero, Microsoft Office, Lenovo Online Backup, and Identity Guard (if you register with Lenovo). There was an on-screen note that said you could still register and skip the Identity Guard software. I skipped this altogether.
The Lenovo Central software started upon the first desktop load. It is an application that houses a lot of annoying adware, including ads for OneBiz Small Business Mgmt Software and Staples. I was not pleased with this. However, with the exception of Microsoft Office, there were no free trials for anything else installed and the Desktop was clean. This was nice.
Overall, my initial impressions were quite positive. I am proud to own my own ThinkPad, as I have a lot of respect for the product. This laptop is solid and fast, even with its somewhat-dated 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo. It only comes with 3GB of RAM. Generally, you can get more powerful hardware for this price from other brands, but I see it as a trade-off because I wanted a ThinkPad.
I may install the 64-bit Windows 7, but then I will lose all of the Lenovo customizations. Lenovo worked with Microsoft to create an “Enhanced Experience” by shortening boot times and shutdown times. Microsoft says that you cannot “upgrade” to at 64-bit version from a 32-bit version. Instead you must do a complete new installation. Perhaps a dual-boot scenario is what I need. It depends on what I end up doing with this laptop.
For the ThinkPad fan or for someone who wants business-level build quality, this laptop may suit your needs nicely.

I need to replace the front touch panel on Maytag oven, some buttons work, and some don’t. Any Idea?

Is the panel the type where each button is a little bubble or indention, and when you push it you feel a little click, then the button returns to normal?
If so, these touch pads are pretty simple. The button covers are plastic with an electrical contact pad made in each one, sort of like cell phone buttons. Dirt can build up in them and stop the switch from making contact.
If you can take the front of the panel off, you may be able to take off the plastic cover and clean the inside as well as the switch to get it working again. Make sure you unplug of turn the power off to the oven before you begin to work on it.
I see this a lot in houses with cockroach problems, since the roaches will find their way into the panel and die or leave waste in the switch that stops the contacts from connecting.

Can the Zune 120 touch pad be turned completely off?
I’ve already deactivated the touch pad, but whenever I brush my finger across it the screen lights up. Is there any way to prevent this? I’m just worried about battery life. Thanks!
Well, the lock on top could be helpful occasionally, but I tend to keep the player in my pocket with my thumb on the button so I can adjust the volume at a moments notice (I have some very quiet and very loud songs and tend to keep the whole thing on random). Thanks for the help!
The Zune has a weird way of registering input so the touch pad has to stay on. There isn’t a good way to explain this so I’m going to have you do something. Take your Zune, put a finger on the top part of the touch pad, and hold it there without pressing down. Then press down anywhere on the pad without moving your finger from the top and it will think you pressed up on the pad. So there isn’t way you can turn of the touch pad because it’s needed to detect where your finger is.
