I know it is more common on Server platforms, but what about Desktops and Laptops? Also, would you buy a system with Linux if it did everything you needed to do such as Graphics, Spreadsheets, Word Processing, Internet Browsing, E-Mail at an extremely low cost with high value?
My dad gave me his old laptop for when we go on vacations since I have a desktop.
This thing is a piece of crap-not even gonna bother posting specs
I’ve been reading that a fun thing to do on old computers is install small OS’s like linux, ubuntu, or all those variations. I’ve never heard of doing any of this before; what are the advantages and disadvantages? and how could i do this (legally)

The webcam won’t work at all. XP recognizes it as a “USB2.0 Webcam”, but won’t do anything about it. An error occured during installation, that’s what it says. Is there some kind of driver searcher I can download?
There is nothing written on this webcam, and I can’t remember the developer, I bought it 2 months ago and don’t remember the name of it. It used to work, but since the reinstalling of the XP…
Go to Device Manager (right-click My Computer> Manage> the click Device Managr) and you should see the webcam with a yellow questionmark on it. Right-Click that device and slect update device drivers. Choose to let windows choose aoutomatically. It should recognize the driver.

The design was, to trace the progress of a Poetical Genius, born in a rude age, from the first dawning of fancy and reason, till that period at which he may be supposed capable of appearing in the world as a MINSTREL, that is, as an itinerant Poet and Musician;–a character, which, according to the notions of our fore-fathers, was not only respectable, but sacred….

My mother isn’t very computer-savvy, but I would like to get her a netbook (small notebook) of her own so that she can surf the web and check her email. She doesn’t need a lot of memory, or many bells and whistles. I’ve looked at the Asus Eee series, but my concern is that she wouldn’t feel comfortable using Linux. Any recommendations?
I’m going to be backpacking around the world this next year, and I need a small, versatile notebook computer to take with me.
I have seen the HP mini-note and it seems underpowered. I have also seen the asus linux machine. Both seem OKAY, but are there any other alternatives out right now? Or that will be released before this August?
I fly out to Germany august 30th, so I have some time still, but I’d like to start looking into it ASAP
I have an old Dell™ Latitude™ CP notebook computer with an Intel Pentium microprocessor at 23 MHz and 96MB RAM. I am looking for a stable Linux distro with an easy to use graphical UI. It will be used by my little sister for mainly basic word processing, and light image viewing, and maybe music and small games. It will never be able to be connected to the internet. Do you have any advice of what distribution of Linux I should get for this?

Boy, Sony sure loves to drag its heels when it comes to obvious industry trends. First netbooks were " a race to the bottom ," now the company's saying it "won't sacrifice the quality and design" of its e-readers in order to lay claim to being the cheapest. This comes as a reaction to the Kindle's aggressive new $139 entry […]

With the announcement of the $99 Ocean Reader Copia Tablet we are entering familiar territory. As you probably remember, netbooks went through the same race to the bottom as ebooks and this Ocean Reader is the first of the lot to hit our shores with any fanfare. While I'm sure a mention in the WSJ is fairly important, the Copia and the Alex and the Farf […]

The latest panic in desktop Linux lad was that Dell would no longer be selling Ubuntu pre-installed on laptops and netbooks. Alas, for those who love drama, it wasn't true. In fact, Dell is expanding its Ubuntu desktop Linux offerings. […]
