In Windows XP, how do I get My computer and network places off my desktop?
I loaded a windows XP that I changed, making it smaller. I took a little over a gig of stuff off. But, the only thing I messed up on was placing My computer and network places on the desktop. And I can’t remember for the life of me how to change that. I could make a new disk, but it would take a while to change, then another hour to install.
So how do I make them disappear and only stay in the start menu? And I do have it on an XP theme.
Nevermind, I figured it out just now. Lol. All I had to do was hit delete, then they disappear.
Well the problem with the normal way is that, it is on xp start menu, I accidently said to place them on the desktop even with the xp start menu, before I installed windows.

Right click on your desktop and select properties. Click on the desktop tab. Click the Customize Desktop button. Under desktop Icons remove check mark from Icons you don’t want on your desktop and click apply.
In start menu,
right click on my computer and my documents 1 at a time.
You will see an option like show on desktop.
Click it to show or hide my computer and my documents onto desktop.
Try similar for network places. It will just be like a normal shortcut.
Thank you.
Go to start menu; right click on the desired item, choose "show on desktop".
You have it set to classic start menu
right-click the start menu, then click properties, then check "start menu" instead of "classic start menu"
That’ll get rid of the desktop icons
Right click on your desktop – go to Desktop Tab, Click on "Customize Desktop" button and there you can check or uncheck My Computer and My Network Places. I am running in Classic mode.
